Important Factors to Keep in Mind When Buying a Car for Your Teen

Last updated 6 years ago

Giving your teen his or her own car is a great lesson in responsibility, but before you give in to the sleek, sports car fantasy, keep a few items in mind:

  • Safety

Nothing is more important that your teen’s safety. When you’re perusing the car lot, you can automatically rule out the cars without airbags, proper seatbelts, or other crucial safety features. Since your teen is new to driving, the risk of being in an accident is much higher—it’s best to get a vehicle with a high safety rating.

  • Reliability

It may seem like a great idea to get your teen a “fixer-upper” vehicle, but that could produce disastrous results. If the car isn’t properly looked after, it could overheat suddenly, and your teen would be stranded on the side of the road. Make sure your teen has a solid, reliable vehicle that can get from point A to point B without the need for constant maintenance.

  • Price

It’s best not to spend too much on your teen’s car. Instead, you should look at more reasonably priced used cars—encourage them to become a part of the buying process. Teens have a higher likelihood of damaging their cars, so buying your teen a new, expensive car is generally not a wise investment.

  • Looks

Though admittedly not the most important factor for a parent, your teen might very well disagree! Most teenagers understand why they won't be getting the expensive, zippy convertable, but you might hear some complaints about the puke green four door you've been looking at. Remember that high school is often hard enough on it's own and an extremely conspicuous car may draw undue attention for some. If you're having trouble finding a car that looks decent, but also fits the above criteria, consider consulting your teen to see what areas are most important to them: vehicle body, color, age of the vehicle, etc. Compromise can go a long way towards pleasing both parent and teen.

If you’re planning on surprising your teen with their very own car, you should first make sure they have the proper driver training.
