A Quick Guide for Staying Safe on the Road!

Last updated 6 years ago

Being prepared and aware while driving are extremely important—not only will you be able to prevent hassles such as breakdowns, but you can also prevent accidents. The best first steps to safe driving occur before you even turn the ignition. Remember what you learned in driving school, and go through your pre-drive checklist before you get on the road. Make sure to:

  • Ensure your tires are inflated. This will prevent flat tires and accidents while also improving gas mileage.
  • Check for leaks. Are there spots under your vehicle? Look for leaks, and if you find one, consult a mechanic before driving.
  • Make sure fluid levels are sufficient. Check your oil, coolant, and brake fluid, and add any fluids if necessary.
  • Keep all necessary tools in the car. Be sure you have jumper cables, a jack, a jack cranking tool, a lug wrench, and a container legally fit for holding gas stored in your vehicle for emergencies.
  • Check your lighting. Do your headlights, brake lights, taillights, and turn signals all function properly? Make sure they do before you head out.
  • Put away your phone. Keep your phone on silent and out of reach, or use a hands-free device. Texting or talking on the phone while driving significantly decreases your ability to concentrate and drastically increases your chances of an accident.
  • Adjust your seat and mirrors. Make sure you can comfortably reach the pedals and adjust your rear and side mirrors so you can see behind and beside you. The right mirror adjustments can virtually eliminate any blind spot.
