While getting a driver’s license is a thrilling time for teens, their parents are a little bit more anxious about handing over the keys. The anxiety most parents feel is caused by some sobering truths. According to Be Smart. Be Well., “motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for teens, and teens are four times more likely to be in a crash than older drivers.” While these statistics may seem scary, parents can help their teens be more prepared for the open road if they talk to them early.
“Parents play a key role in preventing teen crashes. Believe it or not, when asked whose opinions they listen to, teens most often said their parents,” says Erin Sauber-Schatz, PhD, MPH, of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), one of the experts featured on the site.
If it is almost time for your child to get their driver’s license, help them gain experience by leading by example, taking them out to practice often, and establish rules and expectations. Remember that parents are the key to preventing teen crashes.
